| For patients with atrial fibrillation for whom traditional treatments haven’t been effective, the Mount Carmel Atrial Fibrillation Center offers an innovative treatment called atrial fibrillation ablation, which, in some patients, can offer a cure for the condition.
With ablation, the tissue that causes atrial fibrillation is destroyed, or ablated, either surgically or through a catheter using radiofrequency energy. Ablation is a technique Mount Carmel physicians specialize in, and one we’ve been using for more than 15 years.
Treatment for atrial fibrillation can be performed by a Cardiac Electrophysiologist or Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and physicians from both specialties review each patient’s case before determining the best approach.
Not everyone is a candidate for atrial fibrillation ablation. The best fits are those who:
- Do not respond to medical therapy
- Are intolerant of medical therapy due to side effects
- Endure continuous or frequent intermittent atrial fibrillation
- Have significant symptoms like discomforting palpitations, tiredness or difficulty breathing
- Already require heart surgery for other reasons (for surgical ablation).
