Columbus – Mount Carmel Health System has earned the 2013 Healthy Ohio Breastfeeding Friendly Employer Award from the Ohio Department of Health.
The Employer Award recognizes breastfeeding friendly companies that support their employees by establishing and maintaining comprehensive, high-quality lactation support programs and work toward establishing paid maternity leave for all employed mothers
“As a healthcare organization, Mount Carmel understands the important health benefits that come from breastfeeding,” said Chris Browning, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Mount Carmel. “We are committed to supporting our colleagues in an effort to realize these benefits.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend mothers breastfeed for the first six months after the birth for the optimal health of the mother and her child. The American Academy of Pediatrics has also found breastfeeding can help reduce a child’s likelihood of developing many medical conditions later in life, including Type 2 Diabetes, Asthma and Obesity.
Mount Carmel received the award during a presentation held on October 15. For more information on the Healthy Ohio Breastfeeding Friendly Awards, visit http://www.healthy.ohio.gov/en/Features/2013/BreastfeedingFriendlyAwards.aspx.
