What does EAP stand for?

EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program.

What is an EAP?

It’s a prepaid benefit sponsored by an organization to assist its employees and their family members with life management problems like relationships, work/career, stress, financial, legal, child/elder care, substance use/abuse and psychological problems.

Who is eligible to use the EAP?

Employees and their dependent family members all are eligible to take advantage of the EAP.

Who will know if an individual uses the EAP?

No one. Use of the EAP is strictly confidential. A signed consent by the client is required to release information to a third party. The Mount Carmel EAP complies with federal and state requirements regarding privacy, duty to report and duty to warn.

What happens when a prospective client calls the EAP?

The employee or his or her family member will speak with the Mount Carmel intake staff to register and receive a referral and authorization.

Who will the client see for help?

EAP clinicians are independently licensed social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and licensed independent chemical dependency counselors. They are knowledgeable about the EAP benefit, skilled at problem solving and experienced in dealing with life management issues.

What happens when the client sees a clinician?

They complete some paperwork and take part in a clinical interview to assess the life management issues they’re experiencing. The clinician will then assist them in developing a plan of action, which may include short-term counseling to address the problem or a referral to a specialist.

What will EAP services cost?

There is no cost to employees and their family members. The fee is prepaid by the employer, whose cost is based on a variety of program components, including the number of sessions and services included in the contract and any other tailored components.

What are EAP work/life benefits?

The Mount Carmel EAP offers legal consultation, financial consultation and referrals for child care or elder care. These benefits are typically integrated into the core EAP benefit.

Does the EAP offer clinical consultation during non-business hours?

Yes. Mount Carmel provides brief clinical consultation over the phone after business hours.

How will the employer know if the EAP is being utilized?

Mount Carmel provides EAP Utilization Reports to sponsoring organizations on a routine basis. These reports are statistical in nature and do not include information that identifies individual users.

How is the EAP promoted to employees and their family members?

Mount Carmel consults with the sponsoring organization to develop an internal marketing plan and provides the organization with a variety of promotional materials. Sponsoring organizations are encouraged to send information to their employees’ homes on at least an annual basis.

How can the EAP assist an organization to address employee job performance issues?

The program offers management consultation to supervisors, managers and HR professionals in order to correct performance problems and retain valued employees.

Can an EAP assist organizations when a traumatic workplace event has occurred?

Yes. One of the important services offered by the Mount Carmel EAP is Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). During these sessions, clinicians come to the work site to meet with groups of employees who are impacted by unusual, traumatic or dramatic workplace events and offers counseling and assistance.
