Mount Carmel’s use of Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT) can help many adults with severe asthma that is not well controlled with medications (inhaled corticosteroids and long acting beta agonists). BT delivered by the Alair® System uses thermal energy to reduce the excessive airway smooth muscle responsible for airway constriction in asthma patients – providing long-lasting control in adults with severe asthma.
Performed under moderate sedation as an outpatient procedure, BT involves introducing the Alair catheter into the patient’s lungs through a flexible bronchoscope inserted through the nose or mouth. The catheter delivers controlled radiofrequency energy along the length of the airway walls in 10 second bursts, causing a reduction of the excessive airway smooth muscle.
The procedure is currently performed in 3 treatment sessions, which are routinely scheduled at least 3 weeks apart. A different one-third of the lungs are treated in each session. Sessions last about an hour, and following a period of recovery from the sedation, patients can go about their everyday activities at home.
