Urology Surgery
Laparoscopic and minimally invasive applications in urology have become increasingly valuable in the treatment of disorders, tumors and malformations of the urinary tract organs. The Minimally Invasive Institute at Mount Carmel West offers several progressive and effective surgical options.

Radical Prostatectomy

Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a minimally invasive technique to surgically remove the prostate gland. It is usually performed to treat early stage prostate cancer before it can spread to other parts of the body. At Mount Carmel, the procedure is performed by hand or by using the da Vinci robotic surgical system.

Nephrectomy

Mount Carmel surgeons regularly perform laparoscopic nephrectomy, which is a minimally invasive procedure to remove a kidney. The procedure only requires three or four small incisions rather than one large muscle-cutting incision in the abdomen.

Nephroureterectomy

When a patient has been diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer in the kidney, Mount Carmel offers a minimally invasive laparoscopic treatment called nephroureterctomy to remove the entire kidney and ureter. The laparoscopic treatment is less painful, requires a shorter stay in the hospital and a faster recovery than traditional kidney surgery.

Transurethral Prostatectomy

Transurethral Prostatectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic prosatitis or an enlarged prostate. This procedure involves the removal of part of the prostate gland through the urethra using a long, thin tube with a viewing instrument (cytoscope). Transurethral Prostatectomy is the least invasive of the prostatectomy surgeries.
