Mount Carmel West is a Level II Trauma Center, which offers patients immediate, life-saving care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our Trauma Center is verified by the American College of Surgeons, who validates that our program meets national standards and recognizes our ability and commitment to provide comprehensive care for critically injured patients.
Experienced Trauma Service Team
Our core trauma service team consists of an attending trauma surgeon, senior surgical resident, junior surgical resident and the trauma nurse coordinator. The trauma surgeons perform a large volume of elective and acute care surgery and possess additional experience in surgical critical care, advanced laparoscopic techniques, vascular surgery and even battlefield surgery. This specialized in-house team of experts works with our emergency department physicians, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, thoracic and vascular surgeons, ear, nose and throat surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, and critical care intensivists, cardiologists, radiologists, hospitalists and
rehabilitation specialists to provide immediate, interdisciplinary, comprehensive care.

The Mount Carmel West Trauma Center is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, giving our highly skilled staff around-the-clock access to:
- Equipment for the management of acute airway, breathing and circulatory problems
- Portable ultrasonography for rapid screening assessments
- Uncrossmatched blood from Blood Bank staff
- Rapid infusors to ensure swift administration of blood and warm resuscitative fluids
- Diagnostic radiographic procedures, including CT & angiography
- OR, CT and lab 24/7
Trauma Program Highlights
- Physician Certification & Training โ The Trauma Medical Director is trauma fellowship trained and board certified in surgical critical care. All trauma surgeons are board certified and receive trauma-specific continuing education annually. All of the surgeons are ATLS verified and most are instructors.
- Trauma Rounding โ Comprehensive daily rounds are conducted on all trauma patients by the Attending trauma surgeon, residents and the trauma nurse coordinator. The team collaborates with the trauma sub-specialists to optimize coordinated care.
- Follow-Up Care โ Upon discharge, trauma patients receive follow-up care in the Trauma Clinic. This clinic is staffed by an attending trauma surgeon, surgical residents and the trauma nurse coordinator.
- Injury Prevention/Outreach Program โ Focuses on preventable injuries and public/professional education.
- On-Campus Rehabilitation Center โ Our CARF-accredited rehabilitation center provides patients with intensive therapies to promote optimal recovery.
- Mount Carmel Crime and Trauma Assistance Program โ Facilitates the recovery process for crime survivors through education, empowerment and therapeutic intervention. Internal and external referrals accepted.
- Sexual Assault Certified RNs โ To provide comprehensive care for sexual assault survivors, we have a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) on staff.
- Certified Primary Stroke Center โ From the Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers.
- Chest Pain Accredited โ By the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
