Family Medicine
The field of Family Medicine has always been fostered and strongly supported in central Ohio by the Mount Carmel Health System. As a leader in the field of both primary care, Mount Carmel has provided a strong and academically-based Family Medicine Residency Program since 1975. This program has produced a diverse group of Family Physicians, who are leaders in the medical field throughout Ohio and the United States. Our graduates practice in many diverse settings, including traditional family medicine office practices, multi-specialty group practices, urgent care centers, hospitalist groups and academic-based practices in rural, urban and suburban communities.

The Mount Carmel Family Medicine Residency is a comprehensive, three-year fully accredited program. Our goal is to educate and train Family Physicians to provide a broad range of primary care services to patients ranging in age from infancy through geriatric. Residents are trained at two of our system hospitals--Mount Carmel West and Mount Carmel St. Ann's. Most of our inpatient training, including the family medicine resident inpatient service, takes place at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s--a community-based hospital which provides our residents with an unopposed learning environment. We are the only residency program providing primary care and inpatient services in the facility. During all three years of training, our residents work directly with various specialists while serving on the inpatient hospital team at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital. At the Mount Carmel West hospital, first-year residents work with other Mount Carmel residents during their MICU and General Surgery rotations.

In addition, residents are trained at our state-of-the-art outpatient office, the Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Family Medicine center, directly adjacent to the hospital. Our center, completed in 2008, provides a blend of an urban and suburban practice environment. This diverse and challenging outpatient experience gives our residents the opportunity to enhance their clinical and procedure skills and develop a strong business foundation that will ensure their success in the field of Family Medicine.

As a Family Medicine resident at Mount Carmel, you will also benefit from interactions with other residents who are training in a variety of specialties, including General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Orthopedics and Transitional Year. An attending staff of 950 includes a teaching staff of nearly 250 physicians, including many outstanding specialists. The Family Medicine Residency faculty consists of a program director, four assistant directors, a behaviorist and multiple associate faculty, as well as community-based Family Medicine preceptors who provide specialized knowledge in the field of family medicine.

At Mount Carmel, we also emphasize community service. During your residency experience, you will be given opportunities to help under-served patients in the Columbus area while further developing your patient care and interaction skills. Mount Carmel Health System has an active Outreach Program which sends a mobile van into underserved areas of Columbus. This program is headed by a family medicine faculty member and our residents play an active role in the provision of care to members of our community with poor access.

An exceptional Family Medicine education is not all you will get from your Mount Carmel residency. You will also learn the intricacies and outs of managing your practice and be exposed to information technology that simplifies the business of modern medicine.

Through our program, you will also have the opportunity to learn from and work with knowledgeable, friendly and approachable faculty. Whether discussing a clinical case, obtaining advice on career planning or just sharing a friendly chat, you will find that our faculty supports your education and development in innumerable ways.

All other considerations aside, the family-like atmosphere and the strong academic focus at Mount Carmel is what defines our Family Medicine program.
