The field of Family Medicine has always been fostered and strongly supported in central Ohio by the Mount Carmel Health System. As a leader in the field of both primary care and tertiary medical care, Mount Carmel has provided a strong and academically-based Family Medicine Residency Program since 1975. This program has produced a diverse group of Family Physicians, who are leaders in the medical field throughout Ohio and the United States. These graduates practice in many diverse settings, including urban, rural and suburban environments.
The Mount Carmel Family Medicine Residency is a comprehensive, three-year fully accredited program. Our goal is to educate and train Family Physicians to provide a broad range of primary and tertiary care services to patients ranging in age from infancy through geriatric. Residents are trained at two of our inpatient facilities at Mount Carmel West and Mount Carmel St. Ann's hospitals. In addition, residents are trained at three of our state-of-the-art outpatient facilities which provide both urban and suburban practice environments. This diverse and challenging experience gives our residents the opportunity to perfect their clinical skills, learn and enhance their ambulatory procedure skills and develop a strong business foundation that will ensure their success in the field of Family Medicine. With over 15,000 outpatient visits between the two office locations and over 85,000 hospital and emergency cases between two hospital locations, residents will have ample opportunity to develop their skills in our busy locations.
As a family medicine resident, you also benefit from interactions with the other 110 residents who are training in a variety of specialties, including general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics and transitional medicine. An attending staff of 950 includes a teaching staff of nearly 250 physicians, including many outstanding specialists. A program director, two associate directors, two assistant directors, a behaviorist and multiple associate faculty, as well as community family medicine practitioners who provide specialized knowledge about the field of family medicine.
At Mount Carmel, we also emphasize community service. During your residency experience, you will be given opportunities to help under-served patients in the Columbus area while further developing your patient care and interaction skills.
An exceptional family medicine education and advanced medical training aren't all you'll get from your Mount Carmel residency. You will also learn the ins and outs of managing your practice and be exposed to the information technologies that simplify the business of modern medicine.
Through our program, you will also have the opportunity to learn from and work with knowledgeable, friendly and approachable faculty.
