All residents are required to attend lectures. Conferences are facilitated by
active members of the Mount Carmel surgical faculty who have expertise on the
topics to be discussed. These conferences are educational opportunities that
provide residents with basic science preparation and review throughout the course
of the 5-year program.
Basic Science Lecture: Basic Science Lectures are prepared
by PGY 3 - PGY
5 residents and presented on a weekly basis with faculty involvement and participation.
Resources include the Physiologic Basis of Surgery by J. Patrick O'Leary,
MD, and The Surgical Review: An Integrated Basic and Clinical Science Study
Guide, edited by Daniel Kreisel, et al.
Journal Club: Journal Club is proctored by senior faculty member Dr. Stephen
Buday. Articles from major surgery journals are reviewed and assigned by first

in order to prepare for the next ABSITE examination and to prepare for board
certification.

with precise anatomic detail are presented by PGY 1 and PGY 2 residents. Topics

by faculty and residents from participating programs within the trauma system,
including general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, radiology, emergency
room physicians, nursing staff, and para-professionals.

pathology interpretation and advances in radiologic evaluation.
