The Mount Carmel General Surgery Residency Program offers a comprehensive program that addresses the full spectrum of general surgery practice. Residents emerge from the program with competency in a broad range of surgical procedures, as well as significant hands-on experience with a variety of patient populations and both inpatient and outpatient surgical settings.

Specialty Services
Colorectal Surgery
Residents work closely with five board certified colorectal surgeons. Extensive experience with both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopies is obtained.
Internal Medicine
Residents rotate on the gastroenterology service, gaining experience in the medical management of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases. Residents learn the indications, complications, and techniques of colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). Residents are also exposed to endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP).
Neurosurgery
This rotation offers experience in the evaluation and treatment of neurosurgical patients. Experience is obtained in the management of neurosurgical trauma
patients, including those with brain and spinal cord injuries.
Plastic Surgery
Faculty members teach the essentials of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
Urology
Residents work with urologists to learn the evaluation and medical/surgical treatment of urologic problems, including urologic trauma.
Trauma Critical Care
Mount Carmel is a Level II Trauma Center with an estimated 760 admissions annually. Residents gain valuable experience in the initial evaluation and follow-up management of trauma patients. Residents rotating on the night float rotation are an integral part of the trauma team.
