The Ohio State University (OSU) and Mount Carmel Health System integrated their
OB/GYN residencies in 1995. Our program combines the superb facilities and high-volume
of Mount Carmel with the excellent resources of OSU into a model 48-month obstetrics/gynecology
residency.
The program is currently approved for 44 residents per year. Eleven residents at each level of training rotate between the University Hospitals and Mount
Carmel West in five to six-week blocks. Residents rotate through obstetrics, benign
gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, urogynecology, and gynecological oncology at both Mount Carmel West and University
Hospitals. Infertility and emergency medicine is done at OSU. The
curriculum fully satisfies revised Residency Review Committee (RRC) special
requirements, including those for primary care training.
The teaching faculty, most of whom have appointments at OSU College
of Medicine, are either board certified or pending examination. All
subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology are represented by board
certified faculty members who are actively involved in clinical
teaching and supervision.
Nearly 2,500 babies per year are delivered at Mount Carmel West,
which also maintains an active gynecological service that includes all
three subspecialties including urogynecology. At University Hospitals,
3,700 babies are delivered each year. Between Mount Carmel West,
University Hospitals, and the James Cancer Hospital, nearly 4,500
gynecologic surgical procedures are performed annually. This volume
provides a comprehensive educational experience for our residents.
Rotations have been added at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital. These
include two PGY-3 residents in benign gynecology and a PGY-1 and a
PGY-2 in obstetrics. Presently, there is no night call at this hospital.
