The Transitional Year Residency Program at Mount Carmel is fully
accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
(ACGME) and offers five positions.
The program has a strong history of training residents prior to
entry into specialty training in many areas, such as radiology,
anesthesiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, neurology, physical
medicine and rehabilitation, obstetrics/gynecology, internal medicine,
and military medicine. For those residents who are undecided on a
choice of specialty, the transitional year residency program provides a
broad range of excellent training experiences, including active
participation in patient care and teaching conferences and an
opportunity for self-study. Transitional Year residents are fully
integrated into the teaching program and work closely with categorical
residents in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics/gynecology,
orthopedics, and pediatrics. Responsibilities and authority for patient
care in the inpatient and outpatient settings are identical to that of
their categorical peers.
Transitional Year graduates possess a solid knowledge base and are
well-prepared to progress professionally. Many Transitional Year
graduates return to Mount Carmel and become members of the teaching
faculty or Medical Staff following completion of specialty training.
Program Scope
Seven months of core
medical rotations are required by the ACGME for all Transitional Year
residents. These include general internal medicine, critical care,
emergency medicine, and general surgery. Aside from these requirements,
residents may elect rotations in internal medicine subspecialties,
general and subspecialty surgery, anesthesiology, obstetrics,
orthopedics, pediatrics, and radiology. Transitional Year residents are
regarded as peers on all services and are given responsibility and
authority commensurate with their skills and educational goals. |
