Palliative Medicine Fellowship
Mount Carmel Health is seeking applicants for a unique one year fellowship opportunity in Palliative Medicine. The Mount Carmel Foundation supports this program for the clinical training of palliative care fellows. As a community affiliate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Wright State University School of Medicine, Mount Carmel has provided Medical Education since the early 1900s. Mount Carmel is an integrated delivery network including four hospitals, various ambulatory centers, an array of community based services and a College of Nursing.

Training Program Provided at Multiple Sites:

  • In-hospital (Acute) Palliative Care in three Mount Carmel Hospitals
  • Our own community Hospice Program (Mount Carmel Hospice)
  • Outpatient setting (outpatient pain and palliative care at the Ohio State University James Comprehensive Cancer Center Palliative Continuity experience)
  • Palliative care in long term care settings for chronically ill patients

Other Unique Aspects:

  • Mount Carmel Palliative Medicine Fellowship operates in conjunction with Mount Carmel's AGME accredited Internal medicine residency training program. (All Internal Medicine Residents have required monthly rotations in Palliative Medicine.) ACGME accreditation for the Fellowship is being applied for in 2007 when program application information becomes available through the ACGME.
  • Extensive data has been maintained on all patients enrolled in Palliative Care Services since 1997. This data provides a source for research and quality improvement analysis.
  • Mount Carmel Palliative Care is a designated Palliative Care Leadership Center - as such as trained 120 institutions in implementing palliative care; and Mount Carmel Palliative Care is a research site for a multi-center grant awarded by the National Cancer Institute to measure the impact of Palliative care on hospitalized cancer patients.

Fellowship Requirements:

  • Citizen of the United States or permanent resident of the US
  • Graduate of ACGME accredited residency program in one of the palliative medicine related specialties
  • An unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of Ohio at the time that training begins
