Dr. Tom F. Lewis Award
Dr. Vassy The Mount Carmel Foundation Physician Philanthropy Committee annually presents the Dr. Tom F. Lewis Award to outstanding Mount Carmel physicians (active or retired) who show exemplary leadership, civic involvement, patient care, leadership development, and support for the Mount Carmel Health System and Mount Carmel Foundation.

The 2008 Dr. Tom F. Lewis Award was presented to Louis E. Vassy, MD, General Surgery at Mount Carmel East. Dr. Vassy’s surgical expertise and innovation, as well as his leadership and community involvement, were the reasons behind his nomination and receipt of the award.

Dr. Vassy earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and served an internship at the university’s hospital. He completed residencies at Ohio State University Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Columbus, and is board certified in surgery. He specializes in breast surgery and was the first to perform stereotactic biopsy in central Ohio. He is Medical Director for Cancer Services at Mount Carmel and serves as a liaison to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
