The Mount Carmel Foundation Physician Philanthropy Committee annually presents the Dr. Tom F. Lewis Spirit of Philanthropy Award to outstanding physicians (active or retired) who demonstrate exemplary leadership and patient care, and also give of their time, talent and financial resources to support Mount Carmel, our patients, and the community.
The 2010 award was presented to Dr. Mark Segal, Hematology and Oncology at Mount Carmel. Dr. Segal is currently on the teaching staff at Mount Carmel Medical Center and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Ohio State University and the current chair of the Board for the Columbus Clinical Cancer Oncology Program. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, Community Oncology Alliance, National Hemophilia Foundation, Columbus Medical Association and Ohio State Medical Association.
Dr. Segal was instrumental in creating an outpatient clinic for indigent patients with cancer and blood disorders, which opened in February, 2010. He is the physician on call, and when there is an indigent patient with cancer or a blood disorder he and a resident visit the patient.
Dr. Segal supports many community organizations including Haven for Hope Cancer Foundation, Holy Family Soup Kitchen, Congregation Beth Tikvah, St. Francis of Assisi Parish and the Mount Carmel Foundation.
Nominees for the 2010 award also included Dr. J. Richard Briggs (Orthopedic Surgery), Dr. Charles Hickey (Ophthalmology), and Dr. Alan Murnane (Obstetrics and Gynecology).
