John R. Briggs, M.D. - Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Briggs We are pleased to honor the distinguished service of John R. Briggs, MD, by naming him a Mount Carmel Physician of the Year for 2007.

A dedicated member of the Mount Carmel Medical Staff, Dr. Briggs is known for his compassion, professionalism, humanism and teaching prowess. His contributions have made a significant impact on the success of Mount Carmel and the lives of many.

Dr. Briggs was born and raised in Columbus. He earned his undergraduate degree at Dennison University in 1955. In 1959 he received a Medical Degree from The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Briggs completed his internship at U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia. He chose The Orthopedic University Hospital in Cleveland for his residency program.

Dr. Briggs joined the Department of Orthopedics at Mount Carmel in 1967, specializing in Orthopedic Surgery. During the course of his career, Dr. Briggs held several positions including:

  • Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics
  • Library Committee from 1977 to 1980
  • Medical Care Evaluation Committee
  • Strategic Planning Task Force focusing on the Outpatient Surgery Market

His service to the profession has included serving as:

  • President of the Columbus and the Ohio Orthopedic Society
  • Board Counselor of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery
  • Academy of Medicine of Columbus and Franklin County
  • Delegate to the Ohio Board of Counselor of Orthopedic Surgery

Not only has Dr. Briggs served as a loyal physician for over 40 years, he also served his country for 4 years as a dedicated member of the United States Navy in the US Submarine Division. Even though he has retired, his love of medicine keeps him motivated to help others. Dr. Briggs volunteers his time at the Physician Free Clinic.

In 2007, Dr. Briggs became an "Honorary" member of the Mount Carmel Medical Staff. This is a title reserved for physicians with outstanding reputations and contributions to medicine, the community and the hospital.
