Myron R. Smith, M.D. - Neurosurgery
We are proud to honor the distinguished career of Myron R. Smith, MD, by naming him a Mount Carmel Physician of the Year for 2007.

A dedicated member of Mount Carmel Medical Staff, Dr. Smith is known for his compassion, professionalism, humanism and teaching prowess. His contributions have made a significant impact on the success of Mount Carmel and the lives of many.

Dr. Smith was born in Gowanda, New York and was raised in the western Pennsylvania/eastern Ohio area. He earned his undergraduate degree at Asbury College in 1949. In 1954 he received a Medical Degree from The Ohio State University. Dr. Smith began his surgical internship at Jefferson Medical Center in Philadelphia. He chose Mount Carmel Medical Center for his residency program and completed his residency at The Ohio State University in 1967.

Dr. Smith joined the Department of Surgery at Mount Carmel in 1976, specializing in Neurosurgery. During the course of his career, Dr. Smith held several positions, serving as:

  • Medical Staff President
  • Chairman for the Patient Care Committee
  • Director of Neuro Intensive Care Unit
  • Credential Representative for the Department of Surgery
  • Peer Support Committee

His service to the profession has included memberships in:

  • The American Medical Association
  • American Association of Neurological Surgeons
  • The Ohio State Medical Association
  • Academy of Medicine of Columbus and Franklin County
  • Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons

Not only has Dr. Smith served as a loyal physician for over 46 years, but he also served his country for 20 years as a dedicated member of the United States Air Force. Even though he has retired, his love of medicine keeps him motivated to help others. Dr. Smith volunteers his time at the Physician Free Clinic and his humanitarian work includes serving the Katrina Coast and underprivileged places in Jamaica, Honduras, Dominican Republic, and Kenya.

In 1999, Dr. Smith became an “Honorary” member of the Mount Carmel Medical Staff. This is a title reserved for physicians with outstanding reputations and contributions to medicine, the community and the hospital.
