Bariatric Patient Selection Criteria | Mount Carmel Health

Bariatric Patient Selection Criteria

To become eligible for bariatric surgery at Mount Carmel, you must meet strict selection criteria, including the following:

⇒ You must be over age 18

⇒ You need to be at least 100 pounds overweight, AND/OR have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40, or a BMI between 35 and 40 accompanied by other health-related issues

⇒ You have to have failed to lose weight through diet attempts or other weight-loss program

You’re also required to attend a free educational seminar to learn about obesity, nutrition, the surgical treatments available at the Mount Carmel Bariatric Center, and insurance coverage. Our surgeons and members of our team lead these forums and are available to answer your questions, offer advice and help with preliminary paperwork. An online video option is available for those unable to attend in person.

If you meet the selection criteria, we’ll also give you an extensive medical evaluation to determine if bariatric surgery is a safe and appropriate solution for you.
