Barium Enema
Instructions
This test requires a special bowel preparation. To help assure accurate test results, it is important to follow Bowel and Abdominal Prep instructions:
- Purchase a #1 or #4 Fleets prep KIT from any drug store or pharmacy. (Not sold over the counter. Please ask pharmacist.)
- Follow the 24-hour INSTRUCTIONS listed on the instruction sheet provided inside the box.
- Start a clear liquid diet 24 hours prior to the examination. This includes Jello WITHOUT fruit, clear broth and bouillon. This does not include milk, cream, fats or butter.
- Drink as many clear fluids as possible during the preparation time. Place this paper behind the glass. If you can see the word "CLEAR" through the glass, the liquid is clear.
- Please remember: Do not eat or drink anything 4 hours prior to the appointment. (If you are on heart medication, please take your medication.)
Barium Enema Air Contrast

Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam. Take a Fleets Enema 2 hours prior to exam.
Esophagram (Barium Swallow)
Instructions
Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. Do not smoke or chew gum 6 hours prior to exam.
IVP

Oral Cholecystogram (Gall Bladder)
Instructions
Fat-free diet 24 hours before exam. 6 Telepaque tablets for 2 consecutive nights before exam. Telepaque tablets require a doctor's prescription. Nothing to eat or drink 12 hours prior to exam.
Small Bowel
Instructions
Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. Do not smoke or chew gum 6 hours prior to exam.
UGI
Instructions
Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. Do not smoke or chew gum 6 hours prior to exam.
Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG)
Instructions
Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam. Take a Fleets Enema 2 hours prior to exam.
