Barium Enema

Instructions

This test requires a special bowel preparation. To help assure accurate test results, it is important to follow Bowel and Abdominal Prep instructions:

  1. Purchase 1 BOTTLE of Magnesium Citrate and 4 bisacodyl 5 mg tablets (Look for bisacodyl as the active ingredient)from any drug store or pharmacy.
  2. Day Prior to exam at 8 AM-- Eat a light meal this includes: any items from the "clear liquids diet list", one boiled or poached egg or small portion of skinless chicken/turkey or fish; white toast- no butter; one 18 fl. oz. can of Ensure®. Do not take Ensure® Plus. Do not eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, butter, milk, cheese, beef, pork, lamb, or whole grain cereals.
  3. Start a CLEAR LIQUID DIET at 8:30 AM until midnight prior to day of exam. this includes: water, lemonade, strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, white cranberry, orange white grape, etc), clear broth or bouillon, and coffee or tea (without milk or nondairy creamer). You may have all of the following that are not colored red or purple: Hydralife™, Gatorade®,carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, Kool-Aid® (or other fruit flavored drinks), Jell-O® (without added fruits or toppings), and ice Popsicles®. Do not drink any alcoholic beverages
  4. Drink 12 oz of clear liquids on the hour from 9 AM through 9 PM. You may drink more but not less. Continue to drink clear liquids until MIDNIGHT then DO NOT eat or drink ANYTHING After MIDNIGHT (Routine medications may be taken with a small amount of water)
  5. At 1 PM. Drink 1 bottle of Magnesium citrate 10 oz. bottle with 8 fl oz water. (suggestion: Chill the magnesium citrate makes it easier to drink)
  6. At 7 PM. Take all four (4) bisacodyl 5 mg tablets with a full glass of water. Do not chew or dissolve tablets. Do not take tablets within 1 hour after taking antacids and/or milk.
  7. This product may cause abdominal discomfort, faintness, rectal burning, and cramps. DO NOT eat or drink ANYTHING After MIDNIGHT or on the day of your exam (Routine medications may be taken with a small amount of water)
Barium Enema Air Contrast

Cystogram

Instructions

Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam. Take a Fleets Enema 2 hours prior to exam.

Esophagram (Barium Swallow)

Instructions

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. Do not smoke or chew gum 6 hours prior to exam.

Oral Cholecystogram (Gall Bladder)

Instructions

Fat-free diet 24 hours before exam. 6 Telepaque tablets for 2 consecutive nights before exam. Telepaque tablets require a doctor's prescription. Nothing to eat or drink 12 hours prior to exam.

Small Bowel

Instructions

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. Do not smoke or chew gum 6 hours prior to exam.

UGI

Instructions

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. Do not smoke or chew gum 6 hours prior to exam.

Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG)

Instructions

Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam. Take a Fleets Enema 2 hours prior to exam.
