Patient Selection Criteria |
To become eligible for bariatric surgery at Mount
Carmel, patients must meet strict selection criteria. Patients may be eligible if they:
- Are between the
ages of 18 and 65
- Are at least 100
pounds overweight AND/OR have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40, or a BMI
between 35 and 40 accompanied by other health-related issues
- Have failed to
lose weight through diet attempts or other weight-loss programs
Patients also must attend a free educational forum to
learn about obesity, nutrition, the surgical treatments available at Mount
Carmel, and insurance coverage. Mount Carmel surgeons and members of the
program team lead the forum and are available to answer questions, offer advice
and provide preliminary paperwork.
Those who meet the selection criteria receive an
extensive medical evaluation as well to determine if bariatric surgery is a
safe and appropriate solution for them.
