Surgical Weight-Loss Procedures |
Mount Carmel offers two types of bariatric surgical solutions —
the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and the adjustable gastric
banding. Both have proven safe and effective. The bariatric surgeon
will determine which procedure is appropriate based on the unique needs of the
patient. It's important to note that surgery is not a "cure" for morbid
obesity, but these procedures can provide an effective long-term control.
Adjustable Gastric Banding
Adjustable gastricbanding is a minimally invasive surgery
that involves applying a band around the stomach, creating a small gastric
pouch and a calibrated opening to the rest of the stomach. This system limits
the amount of food that the stomach will hold and controls the flow of food to
the digestive tract. It is adjustable and reversible, has a decreased risk of
complications, requires a shorter hospital stay and allows for a quicker
recovery.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery is a permanent solution in
which our surgeons are experts at using open, laparoscopic and robotic
techniques to make the stomach smaller and allow food to bypass part of the
small intestine. Patients will feel full more quickly than when the stomach was
its original size, which reduces the amount of calories that can be consumed.
Gastric bypass is a more established procedure, and the resulting weight loss
happens faster even though the recovery takes a little longer.
