Mount Carmel Hospice and Palliative Care provide quality care for individuals
diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and their families.
Our interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, health aides, chaplains, counselors, and trained volunteers work together provide comfort and care with an emphasis on the quality of life.
Our volunteers are important in supporting this service.
Although we have specific areas in which one can volunteer, the service possibilities are endless.
An Administrative Volunteer helps the office staff keep the materials supplied for our team in the field
A Home Hospice Volunteer provides respite for caregivers, companionship to patients. Oftentimes, they are the members of the team who bring the outside world in to the patient.
A Residential Volunteer provides companionship to Hospice patients residing in nursing homes or assisted living facilities.
A Palliative Care Volunteerserves patients and their families in our Palliative Care Units located in each of our three facilities.
A Special Project Volunteer shares time, energies, and personal talents to complete quality of life projects for both the hospice patients and families and for the Palliative Care Unit.
Sometimes, the project is as easy as decorating a small artificial tree for the holidays or assembling donated flowers to be delivered by Staff.
All Mount Carmel Hospice/Palliative Care Volunteers complete a core training program specifically designed for their level of patient involvement.
They are asked to participate in ongoing inservice education and support.
The individuals who make up the volunteer group share these common qualities:
- emotional maturity and confidence
- a genuine desire to support people with life-limiting illnesses and their families
- the ability to offer assurance and kindness, without judgment
- the ability to listen with sensitivity and respect
- a willingness to give a time commitment on average of four hours per week
- flexibility to adapt to the changes in the patient’s/family’s needs.
