Lung
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in both men and women - deadlier than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined. Unfortunately, lung cancer is usually not found until the tumors are large enough to cause symptoms - when the cancer is in its advanced stages. For that reason, lung cancer has been difficult to treat. But with an aggressive diagnosis and treatment plan from a multidisciplinary Mount Carmel physician care team, early detection can lead to improved quantity and quality of life.

Mount Carmel's multidisciplinary team of physicians ensures an organized approach to treating lung cancer. We combine the expertise of physicians from thoracic surgery, pathology, diagnostic radiology, pulmonology, medical oncology and radiation oncology to design the best treatment approach for each individual. For many lung cancer patients, the individualized care offered by Mount Carmel provides an opportunity for survival and a higher quality of life after treatment.

Mount Carmel offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for lung tumors, including computerized tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), and percutaneous and endoscopic biopsies. Our hope is to identify potential lung cancers in the earliest stages, when the cancer is most effectively treated, and to minimize unnecessary surgeries while ensuring maximum rates of detection and excision of malignant tumors.

When surgery is necessary, our goal is to remove the primary tumor and all affected tissue without sacrificing healthy lung tissue. Cure depends on whether the surgical resection margins are clear of tumor and the extent of any spread. For patients with inoperable tumors, chemotherapy and radiation are employed to relieve symptoms and extend survival.
If you are diagnosed with lung cancer, Mount Carmel has support programs in place to help you. Highlighted services include:

  • Cancer Patient Navigation with the experts to walk you through your cancer treatment process.
  • A Prostate Cancer Support Group that helps patients better understand potential challenges and treatment options.
