Gynecology

Vaginal Hysterectomy

In a vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through a small incision in the vagina. A vaginal hysterectomy may be appropriate when:

  • Fibroids are small
  • The uterus is normal size or only slightly enlarged
  • There is no endometriosis
  • There is not a concern about cancer of the uterus, cervix or ovaries

Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy

In a laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy, one or more small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert instruments and the uterus is removed through a small incision in the vagina. This procedure has broader applications than a vaginal hysterectomy and may be appropriate when:

  • Fibroids are moderate in size
  • The uterus is normal size or only slightly enlarged
  • Endometriosis and scar tissue exist but are confined to the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries
  • There is not a concern about cancer of the uterus, cervix or ovaries

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

In a laparoscopic hysterectomy, four or five incisions are made in the abdomen to insert instruments and remove the uterus. This procedure may be appropriate when:

  • Fibroids are small to moderate in size
  • The uterus is normal size or only slightly enlarged
  • Scar tissue is minimal
  • There is not a concern about cancer of the uterus, cervix or ovaries

Robotic Hysterectomy

A robotic hysterectomy is a variation of the laparoscopic hysterectomy which uses the daVinci Surgical System. Although the patient experience and outcomes are the same, some physicians prefer to use the robotic approach because it has provides a better 3-dimensional view of the surgical field and may enhance dexterity and speed of suturing.

Hysteroscopy

Removes fibroids from the surface of the inner uterine wall via the vagina

Myomectomy

A myomectomy is the surgical removal of uterine fibroids. This procedure, which preserves the uterus, may be preferred by women who plan to have children or want to keep their uterus. In a traditional myomectomy, fibroids are removed through a large abdominal incision. Depending on the size, location and number of fibroids, minimally invasive techniques may be used.

Laparoscopic Myomectomy

One or more small incisions in the abdomen are created to remove one or two fibroids up to 2 inches growing outside the uterus.

Robotic Myomectomy

A robotic myomectomy is a variation of the laparoscopic hysterectomy which uses the daVinci Surgical System.

Endometrial Ablation

Endometrial ablation is used to control heavy, prolonged menstrual bleeding through the destruction of the uterine lining using laser beams, heat, electricity or freezing. It is an alternative for patients who do not want to have a hysterectomy or have other medical conditions that do not allow them to have a hysterectomy. Endoemetrial ablation usually causes sterility, so it is not an option for women who plan to have children.

Pelviscopy

Pelvic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for examining and treating pelvic organs and conditions.

Uterus Suspension

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the tissues and muscles that hold pelvic organs in place are stretched or weakened and the organs press against the vaginal wall. Pelvic organ prolapse is strongly linked to labor and vaginal childbirth and can also be related to prior pelvic surgery and pressure on the abdomen caused by obesity, respiratory probems or constipation. Organs that may be involved in pelvic organ prolapse include the bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina, small bowel and rectum. In extreme cases, pelvic organ prolapse is painful and may cause problems with bowel and bladder functions. When the condition does not respond to non-surgical treatment and lifestyle changes, then surgery may be required. The specific type of procedure used will depend on which organs are involved, how bad the symptoms are, the other medical conditions that are present and the surgeon's experience with and preference for a certain procedure.

Laparoscopic Uterus Suspension

One or more small incisions in the abdomen to repair the affected organs.

Robotic Uterus Suspension

A robotic Uterus Suspension is a variation of the laparoscopic hysterectomy which uses the daVinci Surgical System.
