Endovascular Repair of Aortic Aneurysm

When a weak area of the abdominal or thoracic aorta expands or bulges, it is called an aortic aneurysm. Some aortic aneurysms can be repaired without traditional surgery, using endovascular aortic repair. At Mount Carmel, our vascular physicians are experts at using this minimally invasive approach.

Through small incisions in the groin, catheters are used to guide and deliver a stent-graft through the blood vessels to the site of the aneurysm. The graft reinforces the weakened section of the aorta to prevent rupture of the aneurysm. Compared to traditional surgery, endovascular repair has many benefits, including: a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery time, less pain and a lower risk of complications.

In addition, endovascular surgery makes aneurysm repair a viable option for people unable to withstand traditional surgery because of age, health, or likelihood of cardiac or pulmonary complications.

Endovascular Angioplasty & Stent Placement

While a stent is an effective means of keeping narrowed arteries open, re-narrowing can still occur. That's why Mount Carmel offers vascular brachytherapy, a contemporary radiation treatment designed to prevent recurring blockage in the coronary arteries after a stent placement.
