A heart attack (also called an acute myocardial infarction) occurs when the arteries leading to the heart become blocked and the blood supply is slowed or stopped. Every year, about one million people suffer a heart attack. Scientific evidence indicates that the following six measures represent best practices in the treatment of heart attacks. Mount Carmel data is for the time period October 2008 - March 2009. Ohio and national data is from Hospital Compare and is for the time period January 2008 - December 2008. Instances with fewer than 25 cases are too small to reliably predict hospital performance.
