Perks & Benefits for Resident Physicians

In addition to salaries, our resident physicians receive competitive comprehensive benefits during their residency training at Mount Carmel. Our benefits package provides a wide variety of programs and services to meet the diverse needs of residents.

This summary provides a brief overview of the benefits package.

Medical Plans

At Mount Carmel, we offer resident physicians and their families two types of medical plans that provide a broad range of health benefits including scheduled wellness visits, routine physician office visits, emergency care, and hospitalization. Mount Carmel pays a substantial portion of the Medical Plan’s contribution rates . Some services require a co-pay only, and other services are subject to an annual deductible and co-insurance. There are no exclusions for pre-existing conditions and resident physicians are eligible for the plans upon date of employment or on the date of a qualifying event (e.g., marriage or child birth, etc.).

Dental Plans

We provide our resident physicians with two types of dental plans. Both plans pay 100% of preventive dental care services. Services above and beyond preventive dental care are subject to a deductible. The Standard Plan provides an annual per-person benefit maximum of $1,000 per calendar year. The High Plan provides a per-person benefit maximum of $1,500 per calendar year.

Vision Plans

We provide two types of Vision Plans to our resident physicians. The plans give them access to a nationwide network of private-practice optometrists and ophthalmologists, as well as conveniently located retail stores. Both plans provide coverage for an annual vision exam, lenses, frames and contact lenses.

Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

We provide our resident physicians with basic life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance, which are provided at an amount equivalent to their annual base salary, rounded up to the next $1,000. Mount Carmel will pay the full cost of basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.

Disability Plans

We provide our resident physicians with both short-term and long-term disability plans. If a resident physician becomes totally or partially disabled (unable to do the majority of professional duties) due to an accident or illness, the plans may provide up to $3,000 per month of disability benefit after a 90-day waiting period.

Upon completion of their residency at Mount Carmel, physicians are also eligible to take the disability coverage provided by Mount Carmel with them to their post-residency positions. Physicians, at the time of leaving the residency, have the right to increase their coverage on a “Guaranteed Issue” basis.

Pre-Paid Legal Plan

A pre-paid Legal Plan is available to resident physicians to provide them with low-cost access to a wide variety of personal legal services. All covered services are paid in full, with no deductibles or co-pays. Covered services include office consultation, telephone advice, consumer protection, wills and codicils, living wills, living trusts, identity theft and more.

Employee Assistance Program

An Employee Assistance Program exists at Mount Carmel to provide resident physicians and their immediate families with short-term counseling and assessment services. Mount Carmel pays the full cost of administering these services.

403(b) Retirement Savings Plan

Our resident physicians benefit from the Retirement Savings Plan Mount Carmel provides. The plan allows participants to set aside a portion of their pay on a pre-tax basis, decide how their contributions are invested and receive an employer-matching contribution to the retirement savings plan match account. Participants can contribute up to twenty-five (25) percent of their pay to the plan (limited by IRS regulations) and are always one hundred (100) percent vested in their contributions.

After-Tax Savings Plan

Our resident physicians can participate in an After-tax Savings Plan which can help them save for the future. Contributions are made on an after-tax basis. Interest earned on these contributions is not taxed as long as it remains in the plan.

Paid Leave Time (PLT)

Our resident physicians are entitled to Paid Leave Time (PLT), which is a bank of hours available for them to use for holidays, vacations and short-term absences. Any unused hours are forfeited at the end of each year. For the 2014-2015 academic year, PGY 1 physicians will receive 23 days (184 hours) and PGY2-5 physicians will receive 28 days (224 hours).

Health Care Flexible Spending Account

Our resident physicians can benefit from the health care flexible spending account the hospital provides that allows them to set aside money each pay period on a pre-tax basis to reimburse themselves for eligible expenses not covered by the Medical, Dental or Vision Plans.

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account

Resident physicians are eligible for the dependent care flexible spending account that allows them to set aside money each pay period on a pre-tax basis to reimburse themselves for eligible expenses related to the care of a parent, spouse or child.

Voluntary Benefits

Resident physicians can choose to participate in a variety of insurance plans offered by the Farmington Company at a group rate. Most of the programs may be taken with them should they leave Mount Carmel with no change in premiums or benefits. Some of the offerings include: Short Term Disability, Auto/Home Owners Insurance, Universal Life Insurance, Pet Insurance and many others.

Adoption Benefits

Resident physicians are eligible for an adoption benefit that will reimburse up to $3,000 for covered expenses associated with adopting a child. Covered expenses include legal fees, medical expenses, welfare and agency fees and other approved expenses.

Childcare Discounts

Resident physicians are entitled to the childcare discount program that provides a discount on daycare costs through participating area daycare providers.

COESRA

Central Ohio Employee Services and Recreation (COESRA), which is composed of more than 250 companies, provides our resident physicians benefits in the form of discounts from member organizations. Associates may participate immediately upon date of hire.

Credit Union

Credit Union services are available to resident physicians and generally include checking accounts, loans, VISA, IRAs, U.S. savings bonds, share certificates, car insurance, home owners insurance and life insurance. Credit union offices are located at Mount Carmel West and Mount Carmel St. Ann’s; ATMs are located at other Mount Carmel sites as well as an office just minutes from the Mount Carmel East campus.

Professional Indemnification

Mount Carmel provides resident physicians with a comprehensive Risk Management program which includes professional indemnification.

Food Allowance

Each of our resident physicians receives an allowance to be used for the purchase of food. At the beginning of each academic year, the resident’s ID badge will be loaded with a predetermined amount and the resident will be able to use his/her account to purchase food and beverage in the hospital cafeteria or coffee shop.

Educational Allowance

Resident physicians may be eligible for an Educational Allowance during the term of their contractual agreement for educational meetings or conferences as deemed appropriate and at the sole discretion of MCHS.

Upon approval residents may take up to five (5) days a year for conference leave. This time is in addition to Personal Leave Time. Mount Carmel will reimburse residents for eligible expenses provided the receipts are submitted within the designated time frame and all guidelines are met that are outlined in the Resident Physician Handbook and Policy Manual.

Parking

All of our resident physicians have access to free parking at all campus locations.

White Lab Coats
