Robotic Prostatectomy at Mount Carmel West
Robotic Prostatectomy is a robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery that is quickly becoming the gold standard treatment for removal of the prostate following early diagnosis of prostate cancer. This state-of-the-art technology is available at Mount Carmel West on the da Vinci surgical system.

The da Vinci surgical system allows surgeons to perform radical prostatectomy with the aid of robotics. Robotic components that are entirely under the physician’s control give the surgeon a clearer, magnified vision of operable organs and allow for scaled-down movements and tinier cuts, making delicate surgeries more precise.

A traditional, open radical prostatectomy takes two to four hours to perform, and requires about a three-day hospital stay and three to five weeks of recovery time. Performing the procedure laparoscopically (using a very small camera and surgical tools inserted in much smaller incisions) with the aid of robotics, results in less blood loss, less pain and scarring, a faster recovery, reduced risk of infection, a shorter hospital stay, and a quicker return to regular activities.
