Mount Carmel East offers immediate, life-saving care 24 hours a day, seven days a week at our Level II Trauma Center. Our Trauma Center is verified by the American College of Surgeons, which ensures that our program meets national standards and recognizes our ability and commitment to provide comprehensive care for critically injured patients. The hospital is also a Comprehensive Stroke Center, ensuring we can provide the critical care necessary to meet the specialized needs of stroke patients and improve long-term outcomes.

Expert Trauma Service Team

Our core trauma service team consists of an attending trauma surgeon, general surgery residents, and trauma nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Our trauma surgeons perform a large volume of elective and acute care surgeries and have additional experience in surgical critical care, advanced laparoscopic techniques, vascular surgery and even battlefield surgery.

Our trauma team is available at all times and collaborates with our emergency department physicians, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and other specialists to provide immediate, multidisciplinary and comprehensive care from resuscitation through discharge. All of our trauma surgeons are board-certified – some in surgical critical care – and receive trauma-specific continuing education annually. They are also ATLS-certified and most are instructors.

Facilities & Equipment

The Trauma Center was thoughtfully designed with patients, our trauma team and EMS partners in mind. From the three trauma bays to the operative services, lab/blood bank and specialty care units in the critical care tower, Mount Carmel East offers unsurpassed facilities and equipment for the trauma patients we treat.

Level II Center Requirements

Level II trauma centers are clinically equivalent to Level I centers. Both provide comprehensive, definitive care of severely injured patients. The difference comes down to two words: research and volume. Level I trauma centers must admit at least 1,200 trauma patients annually and must publish 20 peer-reviewed articles every three years as part of their commitment to research.

Continuing Care

Mount Carmel’s trauma services don't end in the emergency room. Our trauma team not only visits with each patient each day during rounds, but also continues to follow up with them once they’re discharged. We also have a wide variety of people, facilities and services available to support our trauma patients' unique needs both inside and outside the hospital. Those include our Rehabilitation Hospital, Crime & Trauma Assistance Program and Forensic Nurse Examiners. And our injury prevention program uses public and professional education and trauma registry data analysis to prevent future injuries. We make each of these programs and services available so our trauma patients can get back to their lives as healthfully and happily as possible, and we can help prevent future traumas, too.
