Recovering from a disabling injury or illness can be challenging, but rehabilitation can oftentimes help you return to your highest functioning level. Whether you've experienced a traumatic illness or injury, an orthopedic or work-related injury, or are coping with a chronic condition, Mount Carmel's team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and audiologists can help you get back to work, your home, your family and your life.
By reducing the effects of body weight during rehabilitation, warm water therapy in our therapeutic temperature pool can reduce pain, increase strength and endurance, improve range of motion and expedite healing.
Mount Carmel Audiological Services tests and diagnoses hearing disorders, hearing loss and balance disorders. Our audiologists assess the extent of hearing loss, balance and related disorders and recommend treatment, including hearing aids. They also select, fit, and dispense hearing aids, and educate consumers and professionals on the prevention of hearing loss.
The effects of cancer and the treatment it requires can cause limitations in daily abilities. Our rehab program helps to restore your physical abilities and improve your quality of life. Therapists work with you to identify your needs and develop a plan to help restore your abilities, improve your safety and reestablish your independence.
Dizziness, feeling unsteady, feeling like you're spinning and loss of balance can all increase your risk of a fall or injury. The Mount Carmel Falls and Balance program works to determine the root cause of these symptoms and create a treatment program to keep you safe. Our highly trained therapists use diagnostic technologies, including Rotary Chair/VNG Testing with Dynamic Posturopgraphy, to provide the most precise and comprehensive assessments of balance and fall risk available. We also employ advanced treatment techniques that can not only relieve your symptoms but also improve your ability to work and perform normal daily activities. (Falls and Balance services are offered at four locations throughout central Ohio.)
Hand therapy helps increase range-of-motion, flexibility, strength and functional use of the hand. Our occupational therapists provide evaluations and treatment for those with significant loss of hand and arm function due to injury or disease, including specialized exercise programs and customized splints.
Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which one or more extremities become swollen when the lymphatic system is damaged or not functioning properly. Breast cancer surgery is a common cause of upper extremity lymphedema. Specialized therapy includes manual lymph drainage, exercise and compression bandaging. Patient education and home instruction are emphasized to provide the tools necessary to achieve lasting results.
Our Outpatient Stroke Program was developed with your independence and your continued recovery in mind. We specialize in the treatment of conditions affecting the nervous system which includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. You will join a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists who possess the training and the compassion to maximize your independence in daily living skills.

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles in your pelvic area. Common pelvic floor diagnoses treated include prenatal and postpartum musculoskeletal, dysfunction, urinary and fetal incontinence, constipation and pelvic and abdominal pain. Physical therapy is an effective treatment for these conditions. Specially trained physical therapists utilize pelvic floor muscle exercise, sEMG biofeedback and a variety of techniques as effective interventions to improve pelvic floor function.
Mount Carmel's experienced physical therapists can help you restore or achieve optimal movement and functional abilities for all aspects of your life. Therapy programs typically involve specialized exercise, hands-on techniques and individualized instruction to rehabilitate an injury or illness as well as promote health and prevent injury.
Nurturing new life puts your body through some extraordinary changes. These changes can strain your joints, cause pelvic misalignment and produce pain in your lower back, buttocks or thighs. These and other pregnancy-related pains can be safely and effectively treated with physical therapy before and after delivery.
Speech, language and swallowing disorders can affect anyone at any age. Mount Carmel's highly trained and experienced therapists provide effective treatment for articulation and speech disorders, poor vocal quality, stuttering, language disorders, cognitive impairments and swallowing disorders.
Mount Carmel offers a progressive new procedure called VitalStim™, which uses external electrical stimulation to "re-educate" the pharynegeal muscles and help reestablish functional swallowing patterns.
