Mount Carmel Physician Instrumental in New Breast Cancer Legislation
Roxanne Grawe, MD, Medical Director for Breast Services at Mount Carmel Health System, joined Governor John Kasich on December 19 for the signing of HB 147. The purpose of this legislation is to raise awareness about a woman’s surgical options pertaining to mastectomies and reconstructive surgery.
The bi-partisan legislation was sponsored by Representative Bill Patmon (D-Cleveland) and Representative Lynn Wachtmann (R-Napoleon). It requires that patients receiving mastectomy, lymph node dissection, or lumpectomy be informed of breast reconstruction options and provided with referrals in accordance with the standards of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
Dr. Grawe was the driving force behind the creation of the original bill on this issue. While in residency at The Ohio State University, she contacted every member of the Ohio General Assembly expressing a concern that mastectomy patients were not receiving information regarding breast reconstruction options prior to surgery. Representative Patmon contacted her and drafted the bill, which is named the “Lizzie B. Byrd Act” in recognition of Representative Patmon’s mother’s own fight against breast cancer.
According to a news release from Rep. Patmon’s office, the Ohio Chapter of the American Cancer Society says that Sub. H.B. 147 could reach and assist the 15 percent of uninsured and uninformed women who suffer from breast cancer annually.
