Rosemary Duffy


Rosemary DuffyCaptain Rosemary Duffy, DDS, MPH, United States Public Health Service (retired) attended The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH and her master degree in public health from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Captain Duffy is a humanitarian whose domestic and international outreach has been carried out in both her professional career and civic organizations.

She has worked in academia and in local, state, and federal governments. She taught at Howard University School of Dentistry, provided oral health care to patients at the Toledo public health department and in private practice with her father, Dr Franklyn Duffy. Captain Duffy has been employed by three federal agencies. At the Department of Veteran Affairs, Washington DC, she provided oral health care to mostly HIV/AIDS infected veterans and planned and coordinated continuing education for dental personnel. As the dental branch chief at the Health Services Resource Administration, Rockville, MD, Captain Duffy led a team that focused on dental education, dental practice, and research. She worked as an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta, GA.

While at CDC, Captain Duffy was detailed to Sierra Leone to help curtail the Ebola pandemic working alongside Non-Governmental Organizations, World Health Organization, and Doctors Without Borders, to track down cases to help prevent further spread of the disease. She traveled to Romania, Brazil, and various cities in the United Stated investigating disease outbreaks of various causes (i.e., infectious, equipment related or medical error) occurring in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Delegated to Mississippi during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Captain Duffy worked in Mobile Army Surgical Hospital as the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team dental lead.

Captain Duffy is an alumni member of The Columbus Chapter of the Links Inc, whose core value is “service to the community.” As chair of the Health and Human and Service Committee, the Chapter was awarded the Lifeline of Ohio Community Award for their work in black churches to increase the number of organ, eye or tissue donors in minority communities. Captain Duffy volunteers with Saint Paul AME Church, through the non-profit “Miracle on Long Street’, to serve those residents that encounter the occasional "bump" in the road by providing clothing, food and personal care items. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority whose mission is to be a “service to all mankind”. Captain Duffy also serves the community by donating bushels of apples and peaches grown on her property to the local food bank.
