The Mount Carmel General Surgery Residency Program offers a comprehensive program that addresses the full spectrum of general surgery practice. Residents emerge from the program with competency in a broad range of surgical procedures, as well as significant hands-on experience with a variety of patient populations and both inpatient and outpatient surgical settings.

The Mount Carmel General Surgery Residency Program actively teaches the six competencies: medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, intrapersonal and interpersonal communications and skills.

Specialty Services

Colorectal Surgery

Residents work closely with five board certified colorectal surgeons. Extensive experience with open, laparoscopic, and robotic colon and rectal procedures is obtained along with performance of multiple colonoscopies.

Gastroenterology

Residents rotate on the gastroenterology service, gaining experience in the medical management of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases. Residents learn the indications, complications, and techniques of colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). Residents are also exposed to endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP). A robust number of upper endoscopies are performed during this rotation.

Trauma/Critical Care

Mount Carmel is a Level II Trauma Center with over 800 admissions annually. Residents gain valuable experience in the initial evaluation and management of trauma patients. This is a rapidly growing service in our surgery program.

Transplant

Third year residents rotate at The Ohio State University Transplant Service.

Plastics

During the third year, residents rotate on the plastic surgery service with emphasis on management of melanoma and other cutaneous neoplasms, skin grafting, and reconstructive surgery.

Vascular Surgery

Mount Carmel's program has historically offered a rich vascular experience to its general surgery residents. This tradition continues as current residents learn both open and endovascular surgery from the Mount Carmel vascular specialists.

Pediatric Surgery

Residents rotate at Columbus Nationwide Children's Hospital for two consecutive months as a third year.

Elective Missions Surgery Rotation

During the fourth year of training residents are given the opportunity to spend a month working in surgical missions to underserved areas.
