Rotation Description:

Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine at Mount Carmel Health System

Below is a description of the rotations we offer to medical students within our department.

For third year medical students, we offer a CORE Family Medicine rotation where you spend most of your time within our residency-based clinic at St. Ann’s Hospital. Here you will have the opportunity to work with both attending and resident preceptors. The goal of the rotation is to allow you to experience the breadth that defines Family Medicine. You will hone your history-taking skills through evaluating undifferentiated patients, learn the complexity of chronic disease management, and see the skill of motivational interviewing at work during preventive care visits. There is opportunity to tailor your rotation to any special interests you have, including spending time on: our inpatient service, observing a nursing home visit, or attending our prenatal clinic. The rotation includes attendance of didactic teaching with our residency.

Please see our CORE Family Medicine rotation syllabus.

For fourth-year medical students, we offer a two or four-week sub-internship with our inpatient service. During your rotation, you will be an integral part of our inpatient team, which will include an attending physician, one PGY-3 and one PGY-2 resident, and one to two PGY-1 residents. The goals of our sub-internship are designed to help you develop the basic skills of medical problem solving and case management. You will take part in evaluating the acute patient during admissions, pre-rounding on your patients and taking part in patient-centered medical rounds. You may choose to spend time on night float for added experience. Typically, students spend one half-day a week in our clinic to experience the importance of hospital discharge follow-up appointments for continuity. There is always room to gain exposure to other aspects of our residency program, so please do not hesitate to ask if you have any special interests.

Please see our fourth-year sub-internship syllabus.

Other Rotations opportunities including electives may be offered throughout the year subject to availability. Please contact the Medical Student Clerkship Director, Rahim Mangalji, MD, with further questions.
