Mount Carmel’s Internal Medicine Residency Program is led by a dedicated group of clinicians that encompasses full-time internal medicine faculty and subspecialists. All members are board certified.


Matthew Chakan, MD, FACP

Matthew Chakan, MD, FACP

Associate Program Director

  • Dr. Chakan received his Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh and his Doctor of Medicine from Boston University. He also completed his Internal Medicine residency at Boston University.
  • Dr. Chakan is Board-certified in Internal Medicine.
  • After working as an outpatient Primary Care Provider for Allegheny Health Network in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Chakan returned to his passion of medical education.
  • Dr. Chakan was an Assistant Professor of Medicine and core faculty member of the Eastern Virginia Medical School Internal Medicine Residency Program in Norfolk, Virginia. He chaired several resident education and development committees and received numerous teaching awards.
  • Dr. Chakan is interested in teaching and practicing Evidence-Based Medicine, caring for the underserved, and developing physicians-in-training using Evidence-Based Medical Education and Adult Learning models.
  • Outside of work, Dr. Chakan enjoys traveling, exploring new restaurants, kayaking, and skiing.

 

Krista Silverman, DO

Director of Ambulatory Care

  • Dr. Silverman graduated from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Doctor's Hospital.
  • Dr. Silverman has been board certified in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment since 2011
  • Active member in ACP, AAFP, ACOFP
  • Offers over a decade of private practice Ambulatory experience
  • Special interests include physician wellness, leadership and career advancement for women physicians, preventative care, chronic disease management, women's health
  • Enjoys travel, concerts, time with friends, and reading in her free time

 

Chris Gailliot, MD

Chris Gailliot, MD

Assistant Program Director

  • Dr. Gailliot graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed his residency at The Ohio State University Medical Center.
  • He has been board certified in Internal Medicine since 1995.
  • Dr Gailliot has 25 years of clinical experience – experience with ambulatory medicine, hospital medicine, ICU medicine, and non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostic imaging.
  • Dr. Gailliot enjoys teaching (and learning) all aspects of Internal medicine. Special interests include cardiovascular medicine and rural medicine.
  • Outside of medicine, Dr. Gailliot enjoys the life of living on a farm and of spending time with family and friends.

 

Samuel Wagner, DO

Assistant Program Director

  • Dr. Wagner earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Kent State University.  He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio with induction into Sigma Sigma Phi.
  • Dr. Wagner completed Internal Medicine residency training and Chief Resident year at Mount Carmel Health System in 2023, where he was recognized as Resident Teacher of the Year and received the Beth Furbee Memorial Award for Compassionate Outpatient Care. Subsequently board certified by the ABIM.
  • Dr. Wagner has interests in medical education at all levels, Infectious Disease, Holistic & High-value primary care, History of medicine.
  • Outside of medicine, Dr. Wagner enjoys trivia, especially staying up to date with science and technological developments, playing tennis and watching professional events (last trip September 2023 to the US Open), and reading on various topics often in the sci-fi genre.  

 

Blase Hennessy

Blase Hennessy, MD

Assistant Program Director

  • Dr. Hennessy received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Toledo, and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toledo College of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at The Ohio State University. He also spent an additional year at Ohio State University as Chief Resident.
  • Dr. Hennessy is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
  • Since becoming a part of the Mount Carmel System, Dr. Hennessy has helped create three Accountable Care Units at Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s, including a Resident managed Academic Accountable Care Unit.
  • Dr. Hennessy is currently the President Elect of the Medical Staff at Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s. He also serves as the Chair of the Peer Excellence Committee. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Sepsis Committee, as well as the Co-Chair of the Mt. Carmel System Sepsis Committee.
  • Dr. Hennessy is currently the President Elect of the Medical Staff at Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s. He also serves as the Chair of the Peer Excellence Committee. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Sepsis Committee, as well as the Co-Chair of the Mt. Carmel System Sepsis Committee.
  • Outside of work, Dr. Hennessy enjoys spending time with family, gardening, and walking his bulldog, Jax.  

 

Karen Miller is the Internal Medicine Residency Program for Mount Carmel's Graduate Medical Education Program Administrator.

Karen Miller

Program Administrator

  • Karen is the Program Administrator for both the Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Residency Programs. She loves working with the residents and helping them navigate their way through residency.
  • Karen is a Columbus native, and graduated from The Ohio State University. She enjoys spending time with her husband Scott and son Shawn, attending concerts, baseball games, and traveling.
