Scholarly Activity & Research Opportunities

At Mount Carmel, we believe research is a vital part of becoming a well-rounded physician.

Our Internal Medicine residents benefit from a robust scholarly environment designed to support curiosity, innovation, and academic growth.

Conference & CME Support
Residents are granted 5 CME days per year to attend medical conferences. Additionally, residents may receive up to $1,000 in additional funding to support their participation.

Protected Research Time
Residents are allotted half-days during Y weeks to focus on research, quality improvement, or scholarly projects—ensuring time to explore academic interests without compromising clinical responsibilities.

Mount Carmel Research Day
This annual event showcases completed research projects from residents, nurses, and healthcare professionals across the system. In collaboration with the Mount Carmel College of Nursing, it offers a supportive platform for podium-style presentations, public speaking experience, and recognition through awards for top presentations.
Now in its 12th year, this event features podium and poster presentations from across disciplines. Internal Medicine residents are consistently well-represented, with recent participation including 2 podium talks and 9 posters.

Resident Research Pilot Funding Award
Residents interested in launching their own projects can apply for this award, which provides:

  • Experience with the NIH-style grant process
  • Access to resources for meaningful research
  • A foundation for external funding opportunities

Mentorship

  • Each intern is paired with a core faculty program mentor
  • Mentors support the transition into training, guide career exploration, and connect residents with additional faculty mentors as interests develop
  • The relationship continues throughout senior years with a focus on leadership, wellness, fellowship applications, and career planning

  • Every intern is matched with an experienced upper-level resident “buddy” who offers guidance, support, and a warm welcome to residency life. From clinical tips to community connections, this mentorship helps ease the transition and fosters lasting relationships from day one.
  • Women in Medicine
  • Physician Scientists
  • Specialty-specific interest groups

  • Residents are encouraged to build a team of mentors for diverse guidance
  • Faculty and specialists are enthusiastic partners in clinical, academic, and professional growth
  • Mentorship is treated as an evolving process tailored to each resident’s goals
