Tommy’s Story

Tommy Rhodes Before

What was the turning point in your life when you decided to pursue weight-loss surgery?

For me, the decision to have weight-loss surgery was based primarily on how I looked. I put on weight after my son was born five years ago, and I was worried that my weight would get out of control. I’m a fashionista and wanted to continue looking good! I didn’t realize how heavy I was until I started losing weight and feeling lighter. I work as a doula and STNA at Mount Carmel, and I feel better being on my feet all day. I can’t believe the difference.

What are the biggest changes you’ve experienced since your surgery?

I love physical activity, like going to the gym, looking for exercises on TikTok and walking. I have a lot more energy, and I’m not that tired anymore. I’m getting a lot of compliments—some people didn’t even recognize me—and that motivates me to keep going. My son told me that my stomach is little, so he has noticed the changes, too. I’ve become much more aware of nutrition, and that has carried over to creating better habits for my son. For example, when I buy juice for him, I make sure there is no added sugar. I didn’t realize how unhealthy I was before. Health is wealth.

What would you say to someone who is considering weight-loss surgery?

Ask a lot of questions before making the decision to have weight-loss surgery. In addition to the surgeon, talk to people who have gone through it. Talk about everything that will be expected of you and the lifestyle adjustments you will have to make. So much of the journey is mental. I recommend joining support groups to connect with other people who are on the same path.
