Navigation and Support

Doctor Comforting Patient

A cancer diagnosis can trigger lots of questions. Getting answers to those questions and having someone you can count on throughout the treatment process is as important to your recovery as it is to your well-being.

That is why Mount Carmel provides Oncology Nurse Navigators. Their assistance is a free service that can not only help answer your pressing cancer questions, but also give you a familiar and informed advocate to facilitate your treatment and see you through it.

Cancer treatment can be a long and complex process, but it often begins quickly, leaving you little time to learn, plan and prepare. Your Oncology Nurse Navigator is there to help.

The oncology-certified nurses who serve as our patient navigators help guide you, give you access to helpful people and information, serve as your liaison with our clinical specialists, and help you understand and prepare for what’s next. They’re your personal resource for cancer care at Mount Carmel.

Specifically, your navigator will:

  • Help you to better understand the care system
  • Offer education on your cancer diagnosis
  • Provide emotional support
  • Connect you to resources to assess your eligibility for assistance with costs, transportation and other needs
  • Provide referrals to resources to assist in coping with side effects of treatment
  • Coordinate meetings with your various physicians

Most importantly, your navigator is a caring, concerned and informed professional at a time when it couldn’t be more needed. Your navigator is available to you each step of the way and is looking out for the next step as well — especially the step that gets you on to your life after cancer.
