Registration is open for the 2025 Dr. O Memorial Run/Walk!

Join us for the 2nd annual Dr. O Memorial 5K Walk/Run, a 3.1 mile (5K) run and one mile walk in honor of the legacy of Dr. John “Jack” O’Handley. Affectionately known as “Dr. O”, he was the Medical Director of the Mount Carmel Street Medicine program for 25+ years where he was a beloved physician, teacher, mentor and friend to all.

The Street Medicine program provides no cost medical care to individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. The medical coach is accessible at eight locations across central Ohio, and provides urgent care services for acute illness, infections, wounds and unmanaged chronic conditions. Proceeds from the race will support the Street Medicine program.

Labor and delivery nurses earn special scholarships to advance their education

Marie Beon and Christy Cortez, both nurses at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, are this year’s recipients of the Dr. Glenn and Elise Haninger Labor and Delivery Endowment Fund scholarship. This scholarship fund, established in 2011 by the late Dr. Glenn Haninger and his wife Elsie, provides two MCSA perinatal associates seeking higher education in nursing a scholarship to help with tuition and books. Both Marie and Christy are currently enrolled in Master of Nursing programs.

Dr. Haninger joined the staff at Mount Carmel Saint Ann’s in 1955 and practiced there in Obstetrics and Gynecology for 37 years, retiring from Mount Carmel in 1992. He was strongly aligned with the Mount Carmel Mission’s dedication to Catholic values, as well as the family atmosphere created at St. Ann’s and throughout the health care system. Dr. Haninger had a strong passion for teaching and lifelong learning. The Mount Carmel Foundation will continue to honor his legacy through the Dr. Glenn and Elise Haninger Labor & Delivery Endowment Fund.

Donor spotlight: Dr. Mark Segal

Every now and then, we have an opportunity to shine a light on a generous donor to recognize their philanthropy, humanity and significant impact on our health system and patients. Dr. Mark Segal, who recently retired from a 42-year oncology practice, has been a stalwart supporter of the Mount Carmel Foundation for decades. His affinity for supporting medical education, care for the poor and underserved and cancer care are evident in his gifts – of time, money and expertise – to Mount Carmel.

Dr. Segal, a 2010 Tom F. Lewis Award recipient, was a member of the Mount Carmel West Development Committee and the Mount Carmel Grove City Capital Campaign Cabinet. “After attending a Champagne & Diamonds fundraising event, I got more involved with the Foundation,” he says. “Medical education and care for indigent patients are not self-supporting, so contributing to those causes is most meaningful to me.”

Now that he’s retired from active practice, Dr. Segal devotes a substantial amount of time to his grandchildren, even helping get them ready and off to school every day. He’s also focusing on getting more exercise, including lots of walking, and looking forward to finding a new hobby he enjoys. He also keeps in touch with his former Mount Carmel West oncology team members and attended an informal reunion with them last month.

We’re grateful to have the support of Dr. Mark Segal and all of the Mount Carmel physicians who contribute to the Mission of Mount Carmel and its Foundation.
