Columbus, Ohio – Mount Carmel Health System is opening a modern, community-centered primary and preventative care hub, the Mount Carmel Franklinton Care Center, and will sunset the Franklinton Emergency Department. This shift prioritizes access, affordability, preventative care, and continuity, while continuing to meet the community’s most important healthcare needs.
“This transformation is about making it easier for people to get the right care at the right time at an affordable price,” said Brian Pierson, Mount Carmel South Region President. “We are growing smarter with the community and aligning our services with what the neighborhood needs now and in the future.”
The new Mount Carmel Franklinton Care Center will focus on walk-in and same day primary care with extended hours, preventative and wellness services, women’s health, mental health care, coordinated social and community support. Through this innovative model, Mount Carmel aims to improve long-term health outcomes while also reducing emergency visits.
Emergency Departments are the most expensive point of access to care, and data shows that most people who currently visit the Franklinton Emergency Department do not require emergency services. Instead, they need same-day primary care, proactive preventative care and coordinated wrap-around support. The new care center will deliver accessible, lower-cost options that help patients stay well and avoid unnecessary emergency visits.
“Our goal is to offer services in Franklinton that genuinely reflect community need,” said Pierson. “We are evolving our services to grow preventative and wellness care that is flexible, easier to access, and more affordable for the community.”
Mount Carmel emphasized that while the service model is changing, its commitment to Franklinton is not. Franklinton is the home of Mount Carmel’s health ministry, where the Sisters of the Holy Cross began serving the community in 1886 and opened the system’s very first hospital. The Franklinton campus is home to the Mount Carmel College of Nursing, hospice and palliative care, and all of Mount Carmel’s community health and well-being programs.
“Mount Carmel has been part of this community for 140 years, and the commitment remains as strong as ever,” said Pierson. “We are changing with our communities to ensure we continue providing the care people need most.”
The Mount Carmel Franklinton Emergency Department will close on August 22, 2026. The new Mount Carmel Franklinton Care Center will open on August 24, 2026, in the Fortuity building at 775 W. Broad Street, Suite 200, Columbus, Ohio 43222. Mount Carmel is committed to retaining all Franklinton Emergency Department staff by reassigning them to other care sites.
