Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Mount Carmel volunteer. Each of our volunteers help us realize the mission, vision, and values of Mount Carmel Health System. Volunteers make an impact each day by providing invaluable services to our patients and visitors that we would not otherwise be able to provide. If you are interested in helping serve our patients and visitors, pursuing personal growth, continuing a lifetime of learning, or returning a kindness shown to you while you were a patient, Mount Carmel has a unique variety of volunteer opportunities to match your interests.

Please click below to learn more about our specific opportunities and the application process.

Our volunteers serve in various capacities throughout our hospital system, interacting with the patients, families, and visitors who come through our care sites each day. The available volunteer roles are dependent upon each hospital and your availability. All volunteers are required to complete a TB test, provide immunization records or complete immunization testing, and provide documentation of a flu vaccination during flu season. Medical and religious exemption forms are approved on a case by case basis. The majority of our volunteer shifts are four (4) hours long and fall between 8:00AM – 4:00PM Monday through Friday. There are limited opportunities on evenings and weekends. Please note that the use of artificial nail products, including gel or dipped polish, will limit the volunteer roles available to you.

If you are at least 18 years of age and are not currently in high school, please complete the application for the hospital at which you would like to volunteer.

We work with each individual to determine a specific assignment, day, and time that fits the individual's talents, interests, and schedule. Volunteers typically serve a four-hour shift, one day per week. Please note that we require a minimum commitment of 6 months or 100 hours from each applicant. Currently, we have limited volunteer opportunities on evenings and weekends. Volunteers will be required to submit to a criminal background check, complete a TB test, and provide proof of or receive a flu vaccine during flu season.

We are excited to be able to offer volunteer opportunities to college students looking to gain experience in clinical settings. These roles include rounding on patients, supporting our clinical departments, and helping direct visitors and guests throughout our facilities. For specific questions, please reach out to the Mount Carmel facility at which you are interested in serving.

While volunteers do not provide direct patient care, all volunteer roles provide students the opportunity to experience the operations of a hospital in addition to interacting with our patients, families, and colleagues.

All student volunteers are required to volunteer on a set weekly schedule each semester. We try to be accommodating of the changing schedules of college students and offer flexibility from one semester to the next. Evening and weekend shifts may be available in limited roles.

Please note that we do not offer internships or volunteering within specific disciplines.

We love teen volunteers and welcome any high school student ages 16-18 to apply to our Teen Program. The Teen Program runs year-round. Our teen volunteers are required to serve one shift per week. Shifts are typically four hours in length.

Teens may volunteer during the summer and/or the school year. Summer shifts are available on weekdays from 8am-4pm. School year shifts are typically available on weekday evenings from 4-7pm or weekends from 8am-8pm.

  • Step 1: Complete the online portion of the Teen Program application to be entered into our database and receive reminders about next steps
  • Step 2: Complete the hard copy portion of the Teen Program application (hard copy packet will be mailed to the address provided on your online application)
  • Step 3: All completed application materials must be submitted to Volunteer Services
  • Step 4: Attend an interview with Volunteer Services staff
  • Step 5: Complete a background check and TB test (parent/guardian permission/participation required) o Step 6: If selected, attend a volunteer orientation

Our EMHC volunteers play a special role in our hospital system. These volunteers support our Spiritual Care Services Department by offering Communion to our Catholic patients during their stay. If you are currently commissioned as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and would like to volunteer at Mount Carmel, please fill out the Adult Volunteer application for the hospital at which you are interested in serving. Please indicate on your application that you are interested in becoming an EMHC volunteer in the Additional Information section of the application. You will be required to submit proof of your commission. If you are not currently commissioned but would like to serve as an EMHC, please reach out to your Parish for more information about the commissioning process.

Mount Carmel Hospice offers expert care for patients diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses. We also work with their families to provide valuable services and support during a difficult time for them. Our physicians, nurses, social workers, health aides, chaplains, and counselors work together to provide comfort and care with a keen focus on each patient’s quality of life. As an integral part of that team, our volunteers provide assistance and a calming, friendly presence for our patients and their families.

If you have a specific interest in Mount Carmel Hospice and Palliative Care, you can learn more about their volunteer program and apply here.

Through funding provided by the Mount Carmel Foundation, teams of volunteers operate a mobile courtesy cart at Mount Carmel East and Mount Carmel Grove City. Courtesy cart volunteers move their fully stocked cart throughout the hospital, offering snacks, beverages, and other complimentary materials to visitors, to make their time at the hospital more pleasant. The courtesy cart is an ideal role for individuals who want to volunteer with a friend or a spouse.

Through our Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs), our hospitals seek the experiences, suggestions, and feedback from our patients and visitors with the goal of improving the experience for everyone who comes through our doors. For more information about serving on one of our PFACs, please contact the appropriate Office of Patient Experience below.

Vigil Companions offer a unique support to patients who are actively dying. These volunteers offer gentle companionship and a reassuring presence when a patient's family or friends may be unavailable or in need of respite. Volunteers in this role may offer soothing music, read aloud from provided materials, or simply sit quietly with a patient. Please indicate on your Adult Volunteer application that you are interested in becoming a Vigil Companion in the Additional Information section at the end of the application. Please note this role is currently available at our Mount Carmel East campus.
