Our weight management program combines clinical expertise, nutrition guidance and lifestyle support — with prescription weight-loss medication when it is appropriate for you. Every plan is built around safety, ongoing follow-up and habits you can keep.

Is medical weight loss right for you?

Medical weight management is care for weight as a health condition, directed by clinicians rather than delivered through a procedure. It can be as straightforward as a series of dietary visits, or it can add prescription weight-loss medication when that is appropriate for you.

This program may be a good fit if:

  • You would prefer a non-surgical approach
  • You want structured, professional guidance
  • You have found traditional dieting difficult to sustain
  • You need support managing weight-related health conditions

No two patients are the same. Your care plan is designed around your needs, your goals and your lifestyle — and it is reviewed and adjusted as you go.

Who may be a candidate

There is no BMI requirement to take part in the medical weight management program. Dietary visits and lifestyle support are open to patients regardless of BMI.
Prescription weight-loss medication is different. Our team generally considers it for adults with:

  • a BMI of 30 or higher, or
  • a BMI of 27 or higher together with at least one weight-related health condition.

Weight-related health conditions may include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Prediabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High cholesterol (dyslipidemia)
  • Heart disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)

Your first visit and what follows

  • Complete pre-screening: Share your basic health information so the team can confirm the program is a fit and route you to the right provider.
  • Meet your provider: Review your health history, current medications, previous weight-loss attempts and your goals. Lab work may be ordered.
  • Build your plan together: Decide what your plan includes — dietary visits, activity and behavior support, and prescription medication if it is appropriate for you.
  • Follow up and adjust: Return visits track progress, manage any side effects and adjust the plan. Weight management is treated as ongoing care, not a single appointment.

Support that continues past the first appointment

  • Medically supervised: Your plan is directed by clinicians who monitor your progress and adjust care as your needs change.
  • Built around you: No two patients are the same. Your plan reflects your health history, your goals and how you actually live.
  • Dietitians and specialists: Registered dietitians and specialty providers available to work alongside your primary provider throughout your care.
  • A path to surgery if you need it: If a surgical option later becomes right for you, Mount Carmel bariatric surgery is part of the same system — you do not have to start over elsewhere.

Four kinds of support, combined to fit you

Your provider helps decide which of these belong in your plan, and how they change over time.

Physician-guided weight loss

Work with providers who review your health history, monitor your progress and adjust your plan over time. Your provider helps select the approach that fits you, which may include nutrition guidance, behavior change, activity planning and prescription options.

Medication support, if appropriate

Prescription weight-loss medication may help with appetite regulation and other factors that affect weight. Which medication suits you depends on your health history, other medications and possible side effects. Your provider decides whether medication is appropriate and safe for you.

Nutrition counseling

Registered dietitians are available to provide individualized meal planning, portion guidance and education on food choices — including support for real-life situations such as dining out, grocery shopping and travel.

Activity and behavior support

Sustainable change depends on more than a meal plan. Your team can help you build routines around movement, sleep and stress, and can connect you with additional Mount Carmel services when they would help.

Non-surgical weight loss FAQs

Non-surgical weight loss — also called medical weight management — is physician-guided care that combines nutrition, activity and behavior support with prescription weight-loss medication when it is appropriate for you. It is delivered by a care team over time rather than through a procedure.

No. Medical weight management can be built around dietary visits and lifestyle support alone. Prescription medication is one option your provider may discuss with you, not a requirement of the program.

Our team generally considers prescription weight-loss medication for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher together with at least one weight-related health condition. BMI is a screening tool, not a complete picture of your health. Your clinician will review your full medical history, and your insurance plan may apply its own separate criteria.

Coverage varies widely by plan and can change from year to year. Some plans cover weight-loss medication, some cover it only with specific documentation, and some exclude it entirely. Our team will help you check what your specific plan covers before you start.

Non-surgical weight loss uses nutrition, behavior change and medication rather than a procedure. Bariatric surgery changes the digestive system and is generally considered for people who have not reached their goals with other approaches. Some patients begin with medical weight management and later consider surgery, and some do the reverse.

Your provider will review your health history, current medications, previous weight-loss attempts and your goals. The visit may include lab work and a discussion of nutrition, activity and, if appropriate, medication options. You and your provider decide together what your plan looks like.

Excess weight is treated as a long-term health condition, and weight regain is common when medication stops. Your provider will talk with you about how long treatment may continue, what happens if you stop, and how nutrition and activity changes support your results either way.

You can still take part in the program. Medical weight management includes dietary visits, activity planning and behavior support that do not depend on a prescription. Your provider can also point you toward Mount Carmel lifestyle medicine or nutrition counseling if those better fit your needs.
