The medical coach runs an established schedule and is not available for special community events, health fairs, or new clinics requests.

For more than 40 years, the Mount Carmel Street Medicine program has provided free urgent medical care to uninsured and underinsured central Ohioans, including individuals experiencing homelessness, refugees, immigrants, victims of human trafficking, and anyone who has barriers accessing medical care.

In addition, small care teams round regularly on people living on the streets to provide direct medical and social care, and follow people from homelessness to housed, ensuring the best transition possible.

The Street Medicine team is comprised of a comprehensive team of healthcare professionals, including an emergency medicine physician, family nurse practitioner, psychiatric nurse practitioner, registered nurses, medical technicians, bilingual case workers, and community paramedic who are prepared to provide the most needed care and support. The Street Medicine program is a proud member of the International Street Medicine Institute, the Mobile Healthcare Association, and is a vital part of Franklin County’s healthcare safety net, providing free quality care to more than 6,000 patients annually. The goal of the program is to reduce unnecessary emergency department visits, and to support and empower community members to create a more vital, harmonious, and sustainable life.

Achievements

In 2019, Trinity Health’s Street Medicine Programs, which includes Mount Carmel Street Medicine, were the recipient of Catholic Health Association’s (CHA) Achievement Citation. Each year, CHA’s Achievement Citation recognizes an outstanding program or service that exemplifies the ministry’s commitment to carry on our mission of compassion and healing.

During the pandemic, soup kitchens and resource centers closed. With our community clinics on hold, the Street Medicine team knew they had to change the way they cared for our most vulnerable. Instead of going to camps one day per week, they increased their rounding to five days a week and began delivering food directly to people experiencing homelessness. During the height of the pandemic, the team distributed more than 28,000 lunches, a practice that continues today. “60 Minutes” recognized the impact the team made in Columbus, Ohio. Watch here.
